The USAID TB South Africa Project supports tuberculosis (TB) patients such as Nothabo by funding local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are trained to care for TB patients in their communities. Health care workers from these NGOs visit TB patients daily to assist them with taking their treatment, to monitor any side effects and to educate them about the disease. Furthermore the USAID TB South Africa Project also supports hospitals through the FAST approach to ensure that all visitors and patients are screened for TB on arrival. With USAID’s support, South Africa has made significant progress in achieving high TB treatment coverage and helping people, like Nothabo.
